Charity Cheque Presentation Evening

At 18:30 on Thursday 18 March 2010, IPA members, as well as representatives of several of the participating Car Clubs, convened in the conference room at Timour Hall Villa to attend a small function where cheques were presented to the beneficiaries of funds raised at the 10th Annual Classic Car & Bike Show, held on 23 & 24 January 2010.

After a short speech by the event organiser, Jo Huysamen, the floor was handed to the Chairman of IPA Western Cape, Mr Deon Huysamen who introduced the beneficiaries to those gathered and presented them with their donations.

The main beneficiary for the 2010 Show was The Chaeli Campaign who received a donation of R10 000.  The volunteer team from Disaster Risk Management, who again so ably assisted with logistics at the event, received a donation of a generator and 2 safety lights as per their wish list and we were pleased when we were informed that these items were put to good use on the following evening (19 March) when they were called to assist at an accident scene!  The final beneficiary of the evening, The South African Red Cross Society, received a donation of R1 500 for their donation of an ambulance and crew for the duration of the Car Show weekend.

After the presentations and speeches, guests were invited to join us in the bar where snacks had been provided.   Although the bar was open, coffee and tea was also available for those that wanted it and one of our Committee members, Martin Margolius, provided some home made wine which was a delicious end to the evening.  The last of the guests left around 9pm after a social and very enjoyable evening.

“The Chaeli Campaign shows what a single young individual can do to change                                                          the lives of others for the better. All you need is a good idea (like sunshine                                                          pots) and the enthusiasm to cause a chain reaction. Chaeli has both.”

Our Mission: To mobilise the minds and bodies of children with disabilities and                                                                 to normalise society through advocacy and education programmes and                                                                 events.

Our dream: To establish Chaeli Wellness Centres within disadvantaged                                                                 communities which focus on the needs of children with disabilities and their                                                                 families. Many children with disabilities are raised by single moms and are                                                                 often placed in residential care – it is imperative that the needs of children                                                                 with disabilities are met IN the community.

"My greatest strength is that I believe that I can do anything."

    - Chaeli Mycroft

In August 2009, the Chaeli Campaign celebrated its 5th birthday as a registered Non Profit Organisation. Established in 2004, the Chaeli Campaign was founded by Chaeli Mycroft, her sister (Erin) and family friends, the Terry sisters (Tarryn, Justine and Chelsea) because of Chaeli’s need for a motorised wheelchair. After raising R20 000 in just 7 weeks – and with contributions and support still pouring in – it was decided that The Chaeli Campaign should be formalised as a NPO and continue to help other children with disabilities throughout South Africa. Adults joined forces with the original founders to manage the business side of the organisation and the original founders were entrenched as the Junior Committee (now called the Founding Committee).

The campaign aims to help children in all communities with assistive devices, varying from hearing aids and wheelchairs, to laptop computers. It has also managed therapy programmes (Physio/OT/Communication) in Ocean View, Masiphumelele, Blackheath, Red Hill and Stikland Hospital (Kuilsriver), as well as running a Therapy Centre from the recently established Chaeli Cottage. The Chaeli Campaign now runs six programmes and is actively involved in mobilising differently-abled children across South Africa. A very dynamic nationwide advocacy programme promotes a unique and practical celebration of the inclusion of people with disabilities.

There is a great need within the field of disability, not only for assistive devices, equipment and treatment programmes, but also for community education, understanding of disability and the normalisation of society through the inclusion of people with disabilities. Our goal is to breathe hope into the lives of children with disabilities and their families as we find ways of improving their independence, socialisation, education and integration into their communities.

We are extremely proud to say that The Chaeli Campaign is the 1st NPO in South Africa founded by children who are active members of the Management Committee. The original 5 campaigners, our Founding Committee, are still actively involved in promoting the Chaeli Campaign and this emphasises our maxim:
Administered by Adults – Powered by Kids.

The Chaeli Campaign aims to change the life of one disabled child at a time in a significant way.
